I am an Assistant Professor at Durham University working on microbiome modelling within the SMART Soils lab. I am interested in understanding microbial interactions with plants and within the soil, by using skills at the intersection of microbial ecology, engineering, and software development. The ultimate goal is to use that understanding to regenerate soils, whether agricultural, urban, or wild.

At home, I’m interested in good food, bad movies, and a variety of books.

Current Interests and Projects:

  • Microbial community assembly
  • Agent based modelling of microbial communities
  • Type VI Secretion Systems (a.k.a. poison-tipped bacterial harpoons)
  • Translating biostimulation and bioagumentation from the lab to the field
  • Enhanced pedagogical techniques

You can read more details on my research page.

Working with Me

I am currently recruiting students; while I do not have existing funding for a student there are always ongoing funding calls which we can work on together. If you are interested in soil restoration and the role microbiology can play, feel free to introduce yourself through my Durham email address at joseph.e.weaver@durham.ac.uk.

Education

  • PhD, Civil Engineering, North Carolina State University (2021)
  • MS, Environmental Engineering, North Carolina State University (2013)
  • BS, Electrical Engineering, Cornell University (2002)

The full listing can be seen on my CV (html, pdf).
